Are Dollars Flying Out of Your Ducts? Energy Audits Work

The rise in popularity of DIY home projects is great for getting engaged in your home and learning more about how your home is put together. But, before you go investing in equipment, supplies and time, it is a good time of year to order a home energy audit and figure out a strategy for home improvement projects that will actually make a significant impact.

What Is an Energy Audit?
Among the things a home energy auditor will assess are the following:

  • Energy bills
  • HVAC system
  • Water heater
  • Insulation
  • Ductwork
  • Thermostat

The auditor will look at your home, how your household runs, the type of equipment you have and how all these factors impact each other. For instance, is your HVAC system big enough/too big for the home’s square footage so that it’s not working efficiently? Is your ductwork installed properly, and does it have leaks and breaks? Do you have enough insulation and is it the right R-value? Is it properly installed in the attic, the walls and crawl spaces? Is your home in need of caulking and weatherstripping? Would your family’s needs be better served by a programmable thermostat than the digital model you currently have?

Efficiency Tests
To help determine the answers to the above questions and others, the auditor will perform two basic tests:

  • Blower door: A powerful fan is fitted to an exterior door frame, and draws all the air out of the home, creating negative pressure so that air from outside leaks in through cracks and crevices. The auditor uses a smoke pencil to determine where air leaks are occurring.
  • Thermographic scan: A scanning device takes infrared pictures of your home inside and out to determine where it’s losing heat or letting in cold.

Once these tests are performed and the auditor has a complete picture of where your efficiency is weakest, you’ll have a better idea where to spend your money on improvements.

What our customers say...

Very professional. Notified me when the technician was on the way. Technician was professional and provided comprehensive advice. He found an issue with one of the units he was able to repair on the spot for an additional fee not reflected in the per unit cost of $69. The company provided a 30 day warranty on the entire system as a result of their service - to include the compressor. That is an extra value that I appreciated.
